The Campaign

Waterbeach Forward is against the proposal of a new town of 13,000 homes to be built in the Parish of Waterbeach in Cambridgeshire. The plan put forward by RLW Estates, a partnership of the Royal London Group, Turnstone Estates, St. John’s College, Cambridge and the Waterbeach Trust (a consortium of local land owners) is essentially the same as the one rejected ten years ago after a full enquiry.

The enquiry found that the proposed development was unsuitable for a whole host of factors and in the meantime many of these, such as road congestion driven by expansion of Ely, have become worse.

This proposed new town, with more houses than Ely would represent massive over-development, consuming green-field farmland, swamping local communities and would bring gridlock to regional and national transport links in the area.

With Northstowe and other major new settlements in the region agreed and about to start, it is by no means certain that a development of this size is actually needed in South Cambridgeshire.

Our Mission:

  • To promote sustainable, responsible development of the Barracks for the benefit of the community.
  • To oppose unsustainable, speculative development on the Barracks that doesn’t benefit the community.
