10 November 2011

Ministers have today (Thursday 10 Nov 11) announced initial details on the move of the main units currently in Waterbeach Barracks. They have stated that 39 (Air Support) Engineer Regiment will move to Kinloss from summer 2012 onwards and that Headquarters 12 (Air Support) Engineer Group and supporting elements will move to RAF Wittering by summer 2013; with the assumption being that the barracks will be vacated and subsequently disposed of by the Defence Infrastructure Organisation. We’re unable to give any firm timelines on our moves or on barrack closure at the moment.

We have been at Waterbeach Barracks for many years and have enjoyed fantastic support and friendship from the local community - that we believe we have very much been part of. We will have fantastic memories of Waterbeach and be very sad to leave it and the many friendships we have made. We must now start to plan for the challenge of moving to our new bases.

We intend to complete initial visits to these locations over the next few weeks so that we can determine issues and then start to draw up a more detailed timeline; until then I’m afraid there is little more detail we can tell you. There are obviously implications for the local area on our departure and we will aim to keep you informed as our planning takes shape. We’ll stay in touch with you through our usual contacts but please raise any issues with us so that we can try and minimise any impact.
